Exposed: Juice Fasting

Many people wishing to purge their bodies of unwanted toxins, chemicals and excess fat, turn to Juice Fasting for an extreme detoxification. Here are some really important facts that you should know before taking the dive into a short-term fruit and vegetable onslaught.

 What is Juice Fasting?

It is a temporary detox program where a person consumes only raw vegetables, fruit juice and water (no solid foods). Common programs last between 1-3 days. Longer durations will require supervision from a health care professional.

What are the Benefits?

There are many reasons why people would pursue a Juice Fast, the following is a list of health benefits that I am aware of. It is clearly not exhaustive and the information I have provided is based on discussions I have had with professionals and articles I have read over the years. I cannot provide resources for this information and do recommend that you do plenty of research on this subject before commencing.

Drastic Weight Loss

Its seems common sense that if you completely eradicate solid foods from your diet, you will naturally lose weight when you stand on the scales. Most people question how much ‘fat’ you actually lose. You can assume that while you are not consuming any fat for that short-term period of the detox, than in turn you will not gain any. The concern for this sort of extreme ‘diet’ is that once you commence eating again, unless you make a radical change to your diet  it is likely you will gain whatever ‘fat’ you lose.

As raw fruits and vegetables have a highly cleansing effect on the bowel and intestines it is likely that you will remove any additional excrement that lines these organs, this will add a noticeable decrease to your overall body weight.

Similarly, fluid retention is said to increase total body weight. There are many causes of fluid retention, inadequate vitamins and minerals, imbalance in hormones, lack of protein, poor kidney function and consumption of pharmaceutical and caffeine related substances. During the detox period additional body fluids can be flushed from the system and in turn reduce you overall weight.

 Immune System Replenishment

There are a number of scientific investigations that have produced research that validates the benefits of ‘juice detoxes’ for the immune system; some of the results are Elevated Macrophage Activity, Increased Cell-Mediated Immunity, Increased Immunoglobulin Levels, Increased Neutrophil Bactericidal Activity etc, etc. Basically what the research suggests is that whilst you are on a Juice Fast your immune system and cleansing organs work over time, with little effort on your part. Similar results have been shown on case studies where people consume one or two glasses of fresh juice a day.

 High Fiber and Additional Excretment Eradication

As a result of poor diet, health conditions of the digestive system and high levels of red meat our bodies can carry concerning amounts of impacted feces (poo) in the large intestine. It is said that John Wayne, after death had an additional 40 pounds of excrement removed from his lower digestive system. Juice fasting literally flushes out the system and in turn can remove much of the buildup that we are carrying in our lower abdomen.

You should NOT attempt a juice fast if you are a…

  • Pregnant or lactating women
  • Child
  • Pre or post surgical patient
  • Person taking prescription medications. (A juice fasting can reduce blood proteins and change the way prescription drugs react in the body.)

Considering that Juice Fasting is an extreme form of detox it can have serious consequences for people with pre-disposed conditions and health issues; it is recommended that before commencing speak with your health care professional.

Potential Side Effects

You may suffer one or more of the following temporary symptoms:

  • headaches,
  • tiredness,
  • hypoglycemia,
  • constipation,
  • acne,
  • increased body odor,
  • hunger,
  • weight loss,
  • bad breath

Higher risk symptoms that should be monitored during the course of the detox, if they progress or worsen the fasting should be stopped and you should consult a health care professional immediately:

  • fainting,
  • dizziness,
  • low blood pressure,
  • heart arrhythmia,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea,
  • kidney problems.

Diarrhea is common due to the style of detoxification, you should be mindful of dehydration and lowered levels of electrolytes.

It is important to note that gradual introduction of solid foods once you have completed a fasting is necessary to avoid complications.
